ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Teams and Qualification

As of 31 Dec 2018, the top 9 ranked ICC Full Members, along with hosts Australia, qualified directly for the T20 Cricket World Cup 2020 tournament. Of those 10 teams, the top 8 ranked sides qualified for the Super 12s stage of the tournament. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh did not qualify for the Super 12s, instead of being placed in the group stage of the competition. They will be joined by the 6 teams who qualify for the tournament via the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier.

ICC T20 World Cup qualification

The host nation, Australia, and the nine best team teams (according to the ICC T20I Championship ranking of 31 Dec 2018) who played in the last edition of ICC Twenty20 World Cup qualifying for the final tournament directly. The remaining 6 new members from the last tournament must compete with regional qualifiers in the World Cup qualifying tournament. Of the teams in the ICC T20 Championship ranking, the UAE and Nepal can only qualify through regional competitions. The final rankings for automatic qualification as at 31 Dec 2k18 were as follows:

The T20 World Cup 2020 usually occurs every two years (four years on this occasion) and is considered to be the pinnacle of T20I cricket. Every Cricket nation, when they begin playing T20 cricket, aim to participate in the T20 Cricket World Cup. Recently, International Cricket Council revealed the updated format for ICC World Cup T20, which is set to be played between 18 October and 15 November 2020.

As per the new World Cup, t20 qualification structure, The host nation, and the top nine other nations in the ICC T20I Championship rankings on 31 Dec 2018 would directly qualify for the tournament while remaining 6 must take a qualifier route. This is the first case since it’s initiation that a team gets an inclusion on the basis of rankings not Test status.

For the 3rd consecutive time, the tournament will feature sixteen teams, The tournament format is divided into 3 stages ie Group Stage, Super 12 and Knockout. Unlike the previous edition, this will feature Super 12 instead of Super 10, granting more opportunities for the Associate members to participate in the second round of the World Cup T20.

In the group stage, 8 teams will be divided into two groups A and B. The top 2 teams from each group will advance to the Super 12 stage, joining the eight highest-ranked teams in the Super 12.

In the Super 12 stage, 12 teams will be carved into two groups of 6. Finally, the top 2 teams from each Super Group will feature in the Knockout Stage comprising Semifinals and Final with the winner to be crowned as T20 Champion.

 

Teams and Qualification Scenarios

With the tournament being hosted by Australia, they have already secured their berth in the World Cup 2020 event. While the next nine spots are set to be determined on the basis of their rankings.

Now, the 8 teams that are guaranteed to book their spot in the Super 12 are India, Afghanistan, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and, Windies. While the remaining 2 teams that will get a bye into the group Stage are Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
